The DJI The Smart Controller allows owners of Mavic 2 to fly without the need for a mobile device. The $ 650 controller includes a 5.5-inch display capable of displaying images broadcast from the connected drone in Full HD resolution.
According to DJI, this screen is also twice as bright as mobile screens, which should make it easier to use in direct sunlight.
This device is a smart but expensive accessory for drone owners. At present, for most drones on the market, homeowners must connect a mobile phone to a controller in order to access most drone controls and view live video images. This is often a tedious process that requires the owner to ensure that multiple products are billed and connected. By combining the screen with the controller, this eliminates an extra step. The integrated screen of the canceled GoPro Karma controller was one of its best features.
The screen itself is an Android device and would apparently be compatible with DJI Go 4, DJI Pilot and other third-party applications. The battery lasts 2.5 hours.
The video is transmitted to the controller connected via the DJI OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system. From my experience, it's the best system available on a mainstream UAV platform, allowing images to reach a mobile device at an incredible distance.
DJI will sell the controller itself starting at $ 650 today. It will also be available in bundles with the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom.
